STEAM kids in the wild

The Ryan and Glover families went to the Chincoteague Bay Field Station for a wetland biology experience. They waded into a marsh wetlands (stinky), learned about barrier island topography and biomes. In the bay they did water quality tests (pH, density, salinity, clarity, temperature, and the amounts of nutrients.). They used nets to sample bay aquatic organisms (echonoderms, hermit crabs, blue crabs, fishes, and a rare baby squid) and then tried their senses on a nocturnal hike. They heard owls, learned that wet noses smell better and got of glimpse luminescent moths. The group also leaned about the local amphibians and reptiles and lots of fungi… maybe a geocache or two were found as well. The Field Station hosts multiple educational events all year, but hosts homeschool events for all ages in the Fall and Spring. Everyone who went was ready to go again! Ask us if you and your family are at all interested.
