Nature School Overview Jan/Feb

Hello all,

We're very excited to welcome everyone back to a new semester of Nature School! Thank you for your willingness to brave the cold with us to explore the treasures the outdoors have in store for us during these winter months.

Here's a preview of our plans for the first month. Please do your best to RSVP on Spaces, and let us know about last minute changes in plans. This helps us know how many students to plan for and begin our programs in a timely manner while not leaving anyone behind unintentionally.

1/29: For our first day back we'll meet at the Hal and Berni Hanson Nature Center. At 10:30 we've been invited to join a walk with a Master Naturalist (this is a public program so please arrive no later than 10:30 if you plan to participate in this portion of the day). At 11 AM we will begin a program indoors at the Nature Center where we'll learn about fossils. https://maps.app.goo.gl/tvsryXCrWuqarHpz7

2/5 This week we'll meet at Blue Ridge Wildlife Center at 10 AM to learn about adaptations of nocturnal animals in Virginia. In the event we need to cancel because of snow, this program will be moved to 2/19  https://maps.app.goo.gl/YDdYEgzWydiixZi1A

2/12 This week we will meet at the Visitor Center of Sky Meadows State Park bat 10 AM, lesson topic TBD https://maps.app.goo.gl/nQ3CGVr3yqFyqar58

2/19 Birding at the State Arboretum (Blandy) at 10 AM This week Lisa Byrd (Virginia Master Naturalist, Audubon member, former home educator) will teach us the basics of bird identification just in time for the Great Backyard Bird Count, an annual Citizen Science initiative to track birds. We'll meet at the Library in the building marked "Quarters" on this map: https://blandy.virginia.edu/sites/blandy.virginia.edu/files/OrientationMap.png

2/26 Forts & Fire building at the Harveys at 10 AM: This will be a more relaxed session to play in the woods and put the survival skills we learned with Tim last semester to use. Rose's property features a couple acres of woods with trails and clearings where we can build stick forts and fire circles. The hill down to the woods is fairly steep and often muddy so dress accordingly. Bring a lunch or treat to cook on the fire if you wish!  https://maps.app.goo.gl/Z8D7BisD5zHhdPaK9
